    Information Accessibility for Sunflower Growers in Tanzania

    The role of information for the effectual functioning of businesses is a central concern for many economists. According to Bello and Obinne (2012) as cited by Ozawa (1999) and Adefuye and Adedoyin (1993), the extent to which people progress in as far as agriculture is concerned largely depends on the availability and access to accurate and reliable information. According to one survey conducted on Marketing and market access for  Tanzanian  financial institutions which included both agricultural marketing cooperative societies (AMCOs) and savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs), results clearly implicated that there were various  inadequacies to many variables (URT, February 2012). Many stakeholders acknowledged to lacking adequate knowledge on marketing skills and market information dissemination. Rebekah (2005) argues that communication plays a major role in nearly every aspect of life. Effective communication does not only help people solve problems but also improve life. Communication experts have further argued that poor communication is at the root of many problems and that effective communication is one solution to these problems. She defines communication as the processes of understanding and sharing meaning. Communication is considered a process because it is an activity, exchange or a set of behaviors that occur over time, its components include people, the message, channel, feedback, encoding and decoding.     PT. Aivon Mediatama adalah Perusahaan yang bergerak pada bidang teknologi informasi. Dalam kesehariannya Perusahaan menggunakan teknologi informasi sebagai penunjang kelancaran bisnis guna memenuhi persaingan dunia USAha yang kompetitif. Untuk mendukung hal tersebut, Perusahaan memiliki Divisi IT yang bertugas untuk mengembangkan dan memberikan solusi terhadap hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan teknologi informasi. Selain itu, Divisi IT berperan dalam membantu menangani kebutuhan user pada divisi lain terkait dengan pertanyaan, pelayanan, dukungan teknis, atau komplain mengenai teknologi informasi. Namun dalam pelaksanaannya terdapat kendala yaitu dilakukannya penyampaian masalah melalui komunikasi secara langsung dan melalui sambungan telepon. Sehingga tidak adanya informasi perkembangan pelayanan bagi pihak yang bersangkutan dan tidak adanya pencatatan data sebagai bahan evaluasi di masa yang akan datang. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah membuat sistem aplikasi berbasis web yang dapat mengintegrasikan antara user dan Divisi IT. Sehingga pelayanan dapat diselesaikan dengan cepat dan terdapat informasi perkembangan permasalahan bagi pihak yang bersangkutan serta adanya historical data yang dapat digunakan sebagai bahan evaluasi pihak manajemen Perusahaan

    The Persistence of Herbicide Residues in Fadama and Upland Soils in Plateau State, Nigeria

    Fadama and upland soil in Plateau State, Nigeria were monitored for the residues of five herbicides widely used for farming within the areas under investigation from June 2010 to June 2012. The average concentration in mg/kg of the residues in the soils were; atrazine (0.123), 2,4-D (0.013), paraquat (0.020), oxadiazon (0.100) and pendimethalin (0.020) for fadama soils. While the concentration of the atrazine, 2,4-D, paraquat, oxadiazon and pendimethalin in upland soils were 0.180, 0.023, 0.030, 0.0130 and 0.010 mg/kg respectively, suggesting the herbicide residues persist at considerably high concentration. Physicochemical factors such as pH, Low Organic matter and textural characteristics of the soils were the factors identified to contribute to the persistence of the herbicides. Other factors like microbial activities were also suggested to play significant roles in the degradation or the persistence of the herbicide residues. The distributions of the residues were monitored seasonally over a period of time within the study area. This was sampled for laboratory analysis during the farming seasons covering planting to harvesting time where most of these herbicides and other chemical farm inputs are still believed to be active in the soils within the study area. The herbicides under investigation were observed to persist more in fadama soils which is characterized by high water holding capacity and low organic matter content.   Keywords: Persistence, herbicide residues, fadama, upland, soil

    Setelah penetapan wilayah KPHL/KPHP oleh Menteri Kehutanan, tahap selanjutnya adalah pembentukan dan operasionalisasi organisasi KPHL/KPHP oleh pemerintah daerah. Pelaksanaan kewajiban tersebut berjalan tersendat dkarenakan terkendala oleh sejumlah hambatan, antara lain oleh peraturan yang kurang memiliki daya dorong dan menyulitkan daerah pada saat implementasinya. Dalam Kerangka Kerja Analisis dan Pengembangan Kelembagaan (IAD-Framework) Ostrom, terdapat konsep 'aturan-aturan yang digunakan (rules in use)' yang dapat digunakan untuk menganalisis isi peraturan dalam hubungannya dengan struktur situasi aksi yang terbentuk pada saat peraturan diimplementasikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji efektivitas penggunaan konsep 'rules in use' untuk menemukan kelemahan-kelemahan substansial dari peraturan pembentukan organisasi KPHL/KPHP pada tingkat provinsi. Analisis dilakukan terhadap PP No. 6/2007 jo. PP No. 3/2008, Permendagri No. 61/2010, dan PP No. 41/2007, dengan metode analisis substansi peraturan dan umpan Balik dari proses implementasinya. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa penggunaan konsep rules in use Ostrom cukup efektif untuk menemukan kelemahan-kelemahan isi suatu peraturan

    Evaluation of the Phytochemical Properties of Eucalyptus Citriodora Exudates and its Potency as Coagulant in Water Purification

    This research work was carried out with the aim to investigate the phytochemical properties and the effectiveness of Eucalyptus citriodora exudates as coagulant for water purification and to compare the effectiveness of this plant extract as coagulant to alum (standard conventional coagulant) and this was done using Completely Randomized Design with loading doses from 0.02g - 0.10g of the extract and alum as standard coagulant. The phytochemical screening was carried out on the plant extract of Eucalyptus citriodora exudates according to the methods as described by Sofowora for testing phytochemical compounds. The following parameters namely; pH, TDS, turbidity, and electrical conductivity of the pond water used were determined before and after coagulation in this study. From the results obtained, the phytochemical properties analysed in this research work indicated that carbohydrate, glycoside, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, resins, proteins and terpenoids were found to be present in high concentration in this plant extract. Alkaloids and steroids were observed to be present in medium concentration, oil was seen in low concentration while reducing sugar and acidic compound were absent in this plant extract. The values obtained in this study indicated that Eucalyptus citriodora exudates showed 86.39% reduction in TDS at optimal dosage of 0.10g but showed increase in turbidity as dosage increases. The pH values (6.6-7.4), electrical conductivity (567-621 µՏ/cm) and TDS (100-455 mg/L) obtained in this study for the water purification were in the recommended range of permissible limits by WHO and USEPA except for turbidity values (45-85 NTU) which were above the set standard for drinking water quality.
